Day 1: Azores Sao Miguel

December 24th, 2018 in Our Travels Worldwide

Did you know there were a group of islands in the middle of the Atlantic between New England and Portugal? Well they are there and a paradise. Their popularity is growing but they are also still blissfully slow and uncrowded. It has been 18 months since we went so let me do my best to tell you where we went and what we saw.

The top question I got when we decided to travel there was, how did you chose that place? Tyler has been looking at a dog breed from only that island in the Azores for a few years and he finally had one shipped to him, our sweet Chocolate Chip. The breed has been wonderful and we have wanted to visit and see the gorgeous island that breeds this dog for the longest time. So we did just that!

This is a picture spot and it is where I snapped one of my favorites of all of our travels. This beautiful one of Cameron looking so calm and peaceful.

The flowers along the route there looked like they had been planned out by a landscaped architect and a very talented florist. But its natural, this place is a dream come true!

Lagoa das Furnas & Caldeiras Das Furnas

We knew that the #1 thing we wanted to do it visit the Furnas and eat the famous stew that they cook underneath the soil at the Furnas. We had just gone to Yellowstone a few months before so the girls were surprised that there was another place that smelled like rotten eggs! First we parked & walked to see the viewpoint of the lake. Then we traveled down there and walked around. The thing that the girls talk about the most from this trip is….the corn. The corn that was boiled in the furnas that they ate. Not the nice restaurant we went to where they got to try the famous stew, or the lake, or the view. Kids are funny.

Terra Nostra Gardens

We were planning to go to our first set of natural thermal pools but we arrived just a few minute before they closed. Just walking about the perimeter of it was gorgeous. Have you ever seen anything so perfectly green?

P.S. Our rental had an ice cold pool. I packed all these floaties to take with us to Europe and New England. I might have brought a whole suitcase for them. Which is why now suitcases have been vetoed by my partner and we just do backpacks. I feel like I deserved that veto.
