Wednesday: Mid Week Ramblings—I Am Special!

My daughter came to a realization today, grabbed my cheeks, squished them together and said, “I am special!” It melt my heart and made me wish she could feel like that forever.

When my daughter is sad my husband has a habit of picking her up, lying her on his shoulder, rubbing her back and listing all the things he loves about her. She just lies their peacefully and listens, “Abby you are special, Abby you are smart, Abby you are a good big sister, Abby you are beautiful, Abby you are funny, Abby you are a big helper, Abby you are my love….” he goes on and on for awhile. Don’t each of that need that sometimes, to have someone just hug us and tell us how wonderful we are?

Growing up my mother made each of us feel special all of the time. One thing she did that was so simple but so special to all of us was telling us the meaning of our names. Mine is butterfly, my mother went out of her way to get books at the library that she saw included butterflies, hanging butterflies over my bed, buying me a small silver butterfly trinket necklace. Now I went and named one of my daughters a name that means—bent nose. I did name her middle name, Anne, after Anne of Green Gables, and there are endless possibilities there. Just something as small as my mother telling us how special, unique, different and fun our names were made us feel incredibly special.

There is a book I adore, a pretty popular one: On the Night You were Born by Nancy Tillman
On the night you were born

The book has a beautiful message, “You are the one and only ever you.” The book goes on to tell of how the moon, polar bears, wind, geese and ladybugs were excited for you to come into the world. It goes onto explain, “So when ever you doubt just how special you are and you wonder who loves you, how much and how far, listen for the geese honking high in the sky. (They’re singing a song to remember you by) Or notice the bears asleep at the zoo. (It’s because they have been dancing all night for you!)

What little things do you do with your children to make them feel special?
